Hilary Thorn, Acupuncturist
I have always wanted to help make people happier and I believe that acupuncture can help you achieve a more balanced and healthy life, physically mentally and emotionally.
ABOUT ME
When I was around 8 years old I sat in the playground listening intently whilst a girl told me her story. Even at that age I remember feeling so privileged that she could talk to me and how much I wanted to make things better for her. As my life continued situations like this happened over and over again. The more I listened the more stories I was told. At the time I simply felt honored that people wanted to tell me about their lives, but often the stories held sadness and pain and I started to wish I could do more than listen.
Over 20 years ago I suffered a bereavement which resulted in depression and panic attacks. A friend convinced me to try acupuncture and I was stunned by how swiftly treatment made me feel calm, grounded and balanced. I had found a way to feel like myself again and I knew I wanted to learn how to give that gift to others. |
I became an acupuncturist so that I could I help other people find calmness, balance and emotional clarity in their lives. The more I listened, the more I learnt, the more I felt that emotional distress was often the catalyst for physical illness. I wanted to be able to help relieve the physical manifestation of illness whilst also looking deeper at the impact of the individuals’ emotional world.
I studied for 4 years at the highly regarded College of Integrated Chinese Medicine (CICM) gaining a Bachelor of Science in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and studying both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Five Element Acupuncture. TCM looks at the systems of the body to uncover why illness manifests and is used to treat a wide range of conditions. Five Element Acupuncture looks at your constitution, considering how fire, earth, metal, water and wood all interact within us, particularly on an emotional level. I am interested in how these natural elements resonate in our lives, how they bubble up, drift away or boil over, how we manage them and how we can strive for equilibrium. An important part of my training was also to study conventional western medicine meaning that I have a sound knowledge and understanding of a wide range of medical conditions.
I started life as an artist and studied Fine Art at Liverpool John Moores University. I worked as an artist, exhibition coordinator and freelance project manager, concluding with an amazing experience working for Aardman Animations. I unexpectedly discovered a passion for sailing and whilst being at sea experienced the most incredible connection to nature. I knew then that I wanted to devote my life to helping people to connect to themselves and their true nature, to be able to take a breath in this busy world and look within in order to find peace and happiness. After a lifetime of intrigue into alternative health and healing I have found that Acupuncture is this journey.
I now live in Cornwall with my family and spend as much time as possible outside. I am passionate about the impact that acupuncture can have on your life and aim to make it as accessible as I can. Due to Covid my community sessions are currently on hold but I offer discounts to those who need it.
I look forward to hearing your story and working with you in order to bring greater health and emotional well-being to your life.
